    SCOTTISH INDEPENDENT FOOD PARCEL

    DATA COLLECTION PROJECT

Until recently, independent food parcel distribution data hadn't been collated regionally nor in Scotland, Wales, England or Northern Ireland. After meetings with representatives of independent food banks and food parcel distributors running in Scotland at the end of November 2018, IFAN's coordinator Sabine Goodwin started collating independent food parcel distribution data from across 18 local authorities.

By the end of March 2019, we'd established that 221,977 food parcels were given out by 84 independent food banks operating across Scotland between April 2017 and September 2018. On top of the 258, 606 emergency food parcels distributed by Trussell Trust venues this put the combined total for this time period at 480, 583. You can read the research briefing on this data set here and news coverage on the release of these figures as well as mentions by parliamentarians here.

In January 2020, we've released further food parcel distribution data from 91 independent food banks operating across 20 Scottish local authorities finding that 278,258 emergency food parcels had been given out between April 2018 and September 2019. Combined with The Trussell Trust's figure of 318,214 for this time period, the total number of emergency food parcels distributed amounts to 596,472. You can read our press release here and our full research briefing Emergency Food Food Parcel Provision in Scotland April 2018 to September 2019 here.

Researchers for The Trussell Trust's State of Hunger report used our data collated in Scotland to extrapolate that approximately 3 million emergency food parcels were distributed by both independent and Trussell Trust food banks across the UK between April 2018 and March 2019. The report's researchers also used our Scottish data to find that 2% of UK households used a food bank between April 2018 and March 2019 while 10% of UK household lived with marginal and severe food insecurity.
