Cash first approach to food insecurity
£63 million was allocated to England’s local authorities to help support people “struggling to afford food and other essentials”. We’d been calling for this kind of funding in principle directed towards hardship funds/local welfare provision with other anti-poverty charities. You can read the guidelines for local authorities here with a list of allocated funds by local authority at section 9.1. and reference to people with no Recourse to Public Funds at section 3. Please let us know if you are aware of this funding being accessed in your area, if you have been able to direct people to crisis grants as a result, and if we can help you approach to local authorities regarding the value of direct cash grants over food bank referrals.
*The following information has been shared by IFAN organisations to support other members during this crisis. With thanks to: ShareIT! Food Bank, Food 4 U Food Bank, Helensburgh and Lomond Foodbank, and Granville Community Kitchen.
