• A survey of food banks operating independently of the
Trussell Trust network of food banks

  • You can read first findings from the study of independent food banks operating in England here. The research was led by Dr Rachel Loopstra with Sabine Goodwin, Barbara Goldberg, Dr Hannah Lambie-Mumford, Professor Jon May and Dr Andrew Williams.

  • "Food banks are becoming embedded in the UK as a response to food insecurity. Local authorities and other frontline professionals refer to and, provide for, independent food banks despite the fact that their operations predominantly depend on volunteer labour and public donations."

"75% of independent food banks started operating in the past 9 nine years, with over a third opening over 2012 to 2013."

"The survey highlights the extensive efforts that communities across the country are making in attempt to meet local needs. It characterises some of the challenges this sector faces, but also the extensive volunteer, financial, and donated food resources these organisations rely on."
