IFAN champions a 'cash first' or income-focused approach in Scotland alongside Trussell Scotland, Nourish Scotland, CPAG in Scotland, Oxfam Scotland, the Poverty Alliance and others
IFAN represents over a hundred independent food aid organisations operating across 25 local authorities in Scotland. In 2018, IFAN's Sabine Goodwin worked with the A Menu for Change project to collate emergency food parcel data from independent food banks in Scotland for the first time. IFAN has worked together with Trussell, Nourish Scotland, CPAG in Scotland, Oxfam Scotland and the Poverty Alliance (IFAN is a member) to advocate for 'cash first' or income-focused approaches to food insecurity.
The Scottish Government committed to a cash first approach to food insecurity in 2022 and published its draft plan to end the need for food banks in Scotland later that year. Following the receipt of over 400 consultation responses, the Scottish Government published their plan towards ending the need for food banks in June 2023.
One of the actions included in the plan focused on IFAN's 'Worrying About Money?' resources project. IFAN has been funded by the Scottish Government to co-produce and disseminate 'Worrying About Money?' resources in Scotland since 2021. By now, every local authority in Scotland is covered by at least a 'Worrying About Money?' leaflet.
